The deadline has been extended for Perryville High School students in the 11th grade (juniors) to apply for the new Student Representative position on the Board of Education at Perry County School District 32. At the end of the first deadline, the Central Office had not received a complete application.
“While reviewing the applications for the position of Student Representative on the Board of Education, we realized that we did not receive any complete applications,” said Communications Director Kate Martin, who will serve as the mentor for the Student Representative. “The most common missing component was the letters of recommendation. We realize that in our excitement to begin this new program, we likely set too tight of a timeline, which prevented interested students from successfully completing and submitting their applications.”
The application period has been extended to Nov. 7, 2023. Applications can be found at bit.ly/3R71vxF, along with eligibility requirements and procedures. Applications are also available in the high school lobby. The application requires the submission of a 400-500 word essay on the importance of including student voices in matters concerning our schools, a 30-to-60-second video telling their fellow students why they wish to serve in this position, along with 2 letters of reference, one of which must be from a PHS teacher or staff member.
An online information session for interested students and their parents/guardians will be held Monday, Oct. 30 at 7 pm. The link for this information session is https://pcsd32.zoom.us/j/99889993289 (Meeting ID: 998 8999 3289) and will be emailed to all juniors.
Applications will be reviewed by the selection committee and narrowed to a list of a maximum of 4 candidates to create the ballot. The candidate videos will be played during Advisory Class on Friday, Nov. 17 and followed immediately by voting by electronic ballot. Election results will be announced at 4 pm Friday, Nov. 17. The new Student Representative will be introduced to the Board of Education at the regular board meeting at 7 pm Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
This first Student Representative will serve through June 2024, and is required to attend the open session of the monthly Board meeting on the second Wednesday of each month.
