Denita Schilli’s fifth graders at Perryville Elementary School have been studying national symbols and redesigned the American flag using those symbols. Some of the imagery chosen by students include the national bird, the bald eagle; The Great Seal of The United States; the national motto, “In God We Trust;” the national mammal, the American bison; the national flower, the rose; and the national tree, the oak. Students also incorporated other symbols of America into their designs, including the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, military symbols, and images of homes, schools, and churches. This project is a lead-up to the class learning about the American Revolution. During the unit, students will also write a letter to “Break Up With Britain.”
