Perry County Middle and High School students recently visited Safety City in Jackson to learn about the rules of the road. Located on Parkview Street inside Jackson’s City Park, Safety City has 1,300 feet of paved road that allows children to learn about traffic safety. The area is designed like a small city with roads, signs, and small buildings like the fire and police departments. The visit to the park was part of the life/job skills unit on personal safety, said teacher Nikki Lappe. “Students have studied safety in the home and workplace including learning about fire safety, poison control, and elevator safety,” Ms. Lappe said. “The visit to Safety City provided hands-on opportunities to practice those skills in a real-world setting. They practiced reacting to the different traffic signs and crosswalks appropriately, and played games like Sign Bingo. We want the students to be able to navigate their communities in a way that is safe for them and others.” Students said they enjoyed the trip. Taylor said that she liked practicing with the different traffic signs, and Kamelia was happy to learn road safety. As for Mason and Azreal, the highlight of the field trip was lunch at Pizza Inn!
